This is an original press photo. One of the most unique races ever held finishes at Los Angeles, when Barton Bainbridge (left) and brother, Oliver, (right) arrive to greet their Mother, Mrs. Helen Bainbridge, after a three-year separation. The two young men were in Australia when they decided to return home to Los Angeles, and to lend zest to the trip they arranged to race half-way around the glove, one to start east and the other west. All transportation had to be paid for in labor, not money, under the terms of the race. Oliver, the elder, finished first after working his way across the Pacific as a wiper in the engine room of a transport. Barton came by the way of the seven seas and India, employed as a common seaman. Both were shipwrecked while making their long journeys and endured many hardships before completing the trip. Photo measures 8.5 x 6.75inches. Photo is dated 09-09-1927.
