This is an original press photo. The XV3 Convertiplane, a new-type aircraft capable of vertical ascent and conventional flight, is pictured in flight in this photograph released in Washington today by the Department of Defense. The plane ascended to a height of about 30 feet in its initial flight at Fort Worth, Texas. No date for the first test was given. Built by Bell Aircraft Corporation, the craft can carry four persons or an equivalent weight in cargo. After vertical ascent it adopts the flight advantage of conventional aircraft by re-positioning rotors at each wing top. Photo measures 9.5 x 7.25 inches. Photo is dated 08-24-1955.
