This is an original press photo. Cornelius Shields Junior, 28-year-old skipper of Columbia's 11-man crew, is shown at the helm of the refurbished 12-meter sloop which beat Britain's Sceptre for the America's Cup in 1958. Shields, shown at Mamaroneck, New York, yesterday piloted the sloop through her first speed test in preparation for defense of the cup in September against the Australian challenger, Gretel. To qualify for the challenge round the Columbia must beat possibly three American rivals in trials beginning in June. Sailing ships. Photo measures 6.75 x 9.5 inches. Photo is dated 05-06-1962.
