This is an original press photo. In 1960 automobiles and trucks discharged more than 11 million tons of hydrocarbons into the air we breathe. These hydrocarbons produce eye-burning and throat-irritating smog. Beginning in the fall of 1967 new cars will come equipped with exhaust control devices which should cause a decline to a low of about 10 million tons a year in 1980. But unless something more is done to control auto pollution by this time, the rapid increase in the number of cars will overtake the effect of the controls and air pollution will begin to rise again.Photo measures 10.25 x 8.25 inches. Photo is dated 02-16-1967.
