This is an original press photo. Workers are shown preparing a 600-foot section of grooved runway with crushed ice to a depth of about one inch for slush tests. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration Langley Research Center, Hampton, Virginia, is conducting basic studies of runway grooving as a means of alleviating the hazard of hydroplaning by airplanes landing on wet or slush-covered runways. The test grooves are made across the runway about one inch apart one-quarter inch wide and one-quarter inch deep.Photo measures 10.25 x 8.25inches. Photo is dated 05-24-1968.
