This is an original press photo. When coal has been reduced to coke in these baking ovens, it is pushed from the oven into a transporter which takes it to the quenching tower. At the same time the coke is pushed from the oven, smoke escapes, as shown here. There is no practical method known for modifying these World War II vintage ovens to prevent this smoke from escaping into the atmosphere, so the ovens must go. During the interim, Armco must limit smoke such as that pictured here to a period of no more than six minutes per hour to be in compliance with the air suit court order.
This is in compliance.
Armco Steel Corp.Photo measures 8.25 x 10.25 inches. Photo is dated 10-18-1973.
