This is an original press photo. The Vatican's Swiss Guards, papal bodyguards for 472 years, stood at attention during a ceremony in the courtyard. One of the most colorful sights in the world is the Vatican's Swiss guard, founded in 1506 by Pope Julius II as a personal bodyguard and as a protective force for the Vatican state. Members still wear the bright red, yellow and blue uniform designed by Raphael, plus breastplate armor and helmet typical of the soldier's equipment during the Renaissance. In recent times the guard has not been called upon to fight any battles, but its early history includes many glorious chapters. Every year a special swearing in ceremony is held in the Belvedere courtyard of Vatican City. The whole guard turns out in full dress to watch new recruits being added to the ancient and honorable order. Part of a company of Swiss guardsmen is dhown here, at attention, while the ceremony is being performed. This familiar sight at the Vatican may someday disappear. The ranks of the Swiss guard are thinning because of difficulty in recruiting. Vatican City, guard. Photo measures 7.25 x 7.75 inches. Photo is dated 04-10-1978.
