This is an original press photo. Joe Gurka, an employee of a northeast Houston poultry packing plant gets a pat on the head from an unidentified fellow worker after he and other workers were overcome by ammonia fumes. About 175 employees of Southern Poultry Processing Inc., 4500 Cochran, evacuated the one-story, windowless building after ammonia from a leaking refrigerator unit filled the structure about 10:30 a.m. Friday. Seven workers were taken to hospitals but none were seriously injured and they were treated and released.Photo measures 10 x 8.25 inches. Photo is dated 05-22-1982.
