The Great Air Race of 1924 concludes THE AMERICAN EXPERIENCE Summer Encore season Tuesday, August 21 at 9 p.m. (ET; check local listings) on PBS. The film, produced by David Grubin and coproduced by Pamela Mason Wagner, chronicles the 175-day-long race among American pilots and European rivals to fly around the world for the first time. (Top, left to right) Lts. Erik Nelson, Lowell Smith, Jack Harding and Les Arnold were the four American flyers who attempted the unprecedented journey. (Bottom) The Douglas World cruisers at Clover Field in Santa Monica before their departure to Seattle where the first flight around the world officially began. A co-production of WGBH/Boston.
