Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

This is an original press photo. Lieutenant Ridley is gently hoisted to safety as helicopter rises and net is reeled in. The device is being supplied to aircraft carriers and naval air stations in England and abroad. England, aero, military, miscellaneous. Fliers downed in water will be rescued in the future by a much simpler and more effective method than previously. The British navy has developed a circular fish net which scoops up crash victims and pulls them up to the hovering helicopter. The net is lowered into the water (above) and the helicopter flies slowly toward the victim. The net is held at the right angle by the drag of the water and by a small sea anchor. The victim need not lift a finger to help himself, which is a great advantage if the flier happens to be injured. The rescued person can be hauled swiftly aboard and taken to safety without rescuers having to leave their places. Photo measures 8 x 10.25 inches. Photo is dated 05-29-1955.
