This is an original press photo. This is a view of the expansive Tagus River from atop the ancient Fortress of St. George, with its copper cannons dating back to the 15th century. Facing the river (at left) is Lisbon's Praza de Commerzio (Commercial Square). The Portuguese capital extends for about five miles along the Tagus, which bring in the ships from the Atlantic (nine miles away) and makes Lisbon one of the world's busiest ports. A city of contrasts, Lisbon boasts broad drives, fine squares, handsome bright-colored houses, modern transportation and other facilities, and excellent landscaping everywhere. Sitting of seven hills, overlooking the modern section of the metropolis, is the ancient Alfama district, right out of the Middle Ages, with dark, narrow streets and centuries-old shops and homes Though it is the capital of a small country (Portugal has a population of seven million and is about the size of Ireland), Lisbon is still the hustling nerve center of the overseas territories that remain of the once-vast Portuguese empire. Portugal-Lisbon-Views Photo measures 8 x 10.25 inches. Photo is dated 07-07-1958.
