Born in Austin, Texas, on February 21, 1914, Zachary Scott started his film career as a star, but that was the only easy break he received in hi, professional life. Everything else came the hard way via sweat, work and heartbreak. The son of a distin, uished physician, Zachary attended the University of Texas for two years, becoming interested in dramatics, and then shipped aboard a freighter for England as a semaan. Determined to make good on his own, he spent 18 months in L,ndon with a repertory company, appearing in some 20 plays. Returning to Texas, he became director of the Austin Little Theatre and re-entered college. After he graduated, he headed east and through his friends, Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontaine, was given a job with the Westport Country Flay-house in Connecticut. It was here that he first began to attract attention and he soon landed good roles in several broadway productions. Hollywood took notice of the rising young actor before long and he was signed to a contract, immediately establishing himself as a screen player of the first rank.
