German Play Creates Controversy All Over The World Accuses Pope Of Not Standing Up to Hitler: The Deputy ( or The Representative-or The Vicar are the various version for the English translation) was written by a 32 year old Protestant Rolf Hochhuth who was the member of the 'Jungvolk", the Nazi organization for children. Herr Hochhuth alleges that Pope Pius XII refrained from condemning Nazi persecution from the Jews. He did so, the play claims, because of a " Concordatum" he signed with Germany before the war and fear Communist victory. The play was first presented at the theater am Kurfurstendamm in Berlin - with Karl-Heinz kellerman in the part of the Pope and Gunter Tabor as Riccardo.Photo shows Karl-Heinz Kellerman as Poe Pius XII and Gunter Tabor as Riccardo, the Vatican Priest hero in the play - in Berlin.
