This is an original press photo. Geologist Jim Ashleman, campmanager at U.S. Borax's Quartz Hill mine site, displays a chunk of ore taken from the estimated $25 billion molybdenum claim Borax has in southeast Alaska. The mine, which will employ about 800 people when it is opened in 1987, may very well change the economic face of this entire portion of Alaska. Many problems must first be overcome - including a 20-foot annual snowfall.
Alaska (State)Photo measures 8 x 10.25 inches. Photo is dated 10-22-1981.
