This is an original press photo. The Starr's family room is a glass enclosed porch at the rear of their home. Leslie, who was 17 Saturday, and her brother, Winfield, 11, relaxed there. For pets the family has three cats (two Siamese, one stray) and a guinea pig. A memorial service for Lt. Maurice Winfield Starr, a Navy pilot and the son of former Milwaukee Public Museum Director Kenneth Starr, will be held Wednesday in Milwaukee. Starr and a friend, Brad Straavaldsen of Madison, died in a private plane crash Wednesday in the mountains northwest of Vera Cruz, Mexico. Starr was 29. Starr, a National Merit Scholar at Whitefish Bay High School and a 1982 graduate of the university of Wisconsin-Madison, joined the Navy in 1983 and became a lieutenant in July 1987. He was stationed at the Naval Air Station in San Diego, where he was assigned to a helicopter squadron. He was attached to the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson. "His first word, literally, was airplane," his father said Saturday. "My wife and I would say squirrel or bird, but he would look beyond. He spent every cent he could get on flying. He loved it. It was his life." Kenneth Starr said his son had been in Mexico on leave when the crash occurred. "He was full of life, adventurous. He dove for sunken ships, sky dived," Starr said. "But he also was sweet, gentle, generous and thoughtful. He called every week and wrote to us when he was at sea." In addition to his father, Starr is survived by his mother, Betty Starr, and a sister, Leslie Gray Starr of Haddam, Conn. The service will be at 2 pm Wednesday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 914 E. Knapp St. Burial will be at the family plot in Libertyville, Md. Photo measures 8 x 9.75 inches. Photo is dated 5-14-1988.
