This is an original press photo. Louis Jones, 67, looks over a mixture of dead fish and dead blue-green algae floating against a lock in Bayou St. John near Lake Pontchartrain. Jones has fished the area for the past 55 years. According to Carlton Dufrechou, Executive Director of the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation, the fish kill was caused by an excessive algae bloom in the lake. The dying algae absorbs oxygen in the water killing the fish. He said the excessive bloom was caused by an increase of nitrogen and phosphorus introduced into the lake via Mississippi River water when vandal's opened the Bonnet Carre Spillway in early June.Photo measures 10 x 8inches. Photo is dated 07-12-1995.
